Putintseva made 90 percent of her forehands above her tournament average
Yulia Putintseva shocked the tennis world by defeating World No1 Iga Swiatek in the third round of Wimbledon 2024. The Kazakh player produced a stunning performance to win 6-3, 7-6(6) and reach the last 16 of the tournament.
Putintseva was in inspired form throughout the match, making 90 percent of her forehands above her tournament average of 84 percent and the draw average of 82 percent. She also hit 12 winners and made just 10 unforced errors, compared to Swiatek's 20 winners and 24 unforced errors.
The victory was Putintseva's biggest of her career and will see her rise into the top 30 in the world rankings. It is also a major setback for Swiatek, who has been in dominant form this season, winning the French Open and the Italian Open.
Putintseva will now face No35 Yulia Putintseva in the fourth round. The Kazakh player will be confident of causing another upset and reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time.
